How Clear is Your
Thinking?

I'm
a big fan of the right brain. It's the seat of
creativity, passion, and excitement. It's a fun place to be.
I suspect it's where most actors live most of the time. It's
what compels you to keep auditioning, keep pushing, and keep
coming back for the kind of abuse you put up with.
I'm
also a big fan of the left brain. It may not be as much
fun, but it's essential. It's where logic, analysis, and
clear thinking live. And clear thinking is what allows
successful business people (of which you are one) to make
great strides ahead.
How
clear is your thinking?
One
of the biggest mistakes I see actors make is thinking
they can just get an agent, show up at auditions, and
someday... someday.
Sorry.
The business is too competitive for that, and if your
mind isn't clear, you've lost a major advantage over the
others that are right for the same roles as you.
Here
are some questions ~ see how many answers you have off
the top of your head:
What
are my 10 year goals?
5 year?
1 year?
6 month?
How well is my agent doing for me?
What are my strengths & weaknesses as an actor?
What are my strengths & weaknesses as an entrepreneur?
How much money did my acting business make last year?
How much money do I expect to make this year?
What specific things am I doing to promote myself?
What's my type?
What solution do I provide to casting directors' needs?
How committed am I to my success?
If
you can answer most of these quickly, congratulations.
You're probably operating your business with a fairly clear
head.
And
if you get hung up on most of them, take a look at how
much clarity you have about your acting career.
Many
brilliant actors have sunk themselves by building up
deposits of what I call, "psychic clutter." It's where
you
want to be able to focus, but thoughts keep popping up in
the way. Ever have that experience?
So
what do you do to clear these distractions out of the
way?
1.
Know what you want, from a right-brain place. It's what
your heart is longing for.
2.
Decide how you're going to get it, from the left-brain.
Don't worry too much about being wrong - throw yourself into
it and you'll learn very quickly what works and what
doesn't. Take big risks.
3.
Evaluate your progress in an analytical way. Let every
other thought that distracts you break up and drift away
like rain clouds.
4.
Keep the cycle going: What do I want? How will I get it?
How well am I progressing?
Keep
both halves of your brain clear, working together, and
aligned with your body. Just as this is one of the keys to great
acting, so it is to being a successful entrepreneur.
Until
next month, my friends, I wish you much clarity.
